Abstract: In order to explore the internal causes of driving safety risks caused by distracted driving on curves, five road conditions were selected, including straight road segment and curve road segment with radius of 125, 200, 400 and 600 m. By use of the driving simulation system, the changes of driver’s steering wheel operation, psychological comfort and vehicle lateral offset when the driver had cognitive distraction and visual distraction were studied. The results show that under the same distracted state, the effects of distracted driving on steering wheel rotation angular velocity ω, vehicle lateral L and driver’s heart rate in curved road segment are greater than those in straight road segment. The smaller the curve radius, the more significant the impact, and the higher the driving safety risk. Under the same road alignment condition, the effects of visual distracted driving on driving behavior, vehicle position and driver comfort are far greater than those of cognitive distracted driving. When driving with visual distraction on a curve with a radius of 125 m, the lateral offset of the vehicle approaches the dangerous critical value, and the driving safety risk increases greatly.

Key words: traffic engineering; distracted driving on curve; angular speed of steering wheel; lateral offset; heart rate
