摘要: The construction of any very long tunnel is benefited by the provision of staging points along its route, but this is not usually possible for undersea tunnels. For transportation tunnels, for railways or highways, the life safety and ventilation requirements for the permanent works,as well as the construction logistics, need to be considered. These constraints can be overcomed by using proven technology from another field of engineering, the off-shore structures that have been employed in the oil and gas industry. These major off-shore structures can be located in deep waters, and can provide intermediate staging points for tunnel construction which also provides the benefit of accelerating the overall construction programme. The paper discusses how these structures can be employed for the benefit of major undersea crossings that have been identified around the world, and particularly in China.
