An Approach to the improvement of Road Safety in Developing Countries

Road fatal accident rates of 47 Countries, road safety trends from 1963 to 1984 of 6 countries of different motorization rates and traffic safety situation in the 10 safest countries are compared. Experiences of countries such as Japan and Sweden which have experienced great success in road safety promotion are reviewed. The reasons for slowness of safety promotion and worsing conditions in developing countries is analysed. It is clear that developing countries are experiencing what developed countries have experienced in the past-road fatal accidents increase with the growth of traffic. In view of this, for developing countries the,lesson and experience should be learned from developed countries. In forming. transportation policy, economics, efficiency and safety should be given equal weight and road safety promotion should be undertaken steadily.
